Beards of Denver followers, meet Jeff Jagunich, a self-described funnyman and artist in Denver who wears his grand beard with pride, here puffed-out for, obviously, high-fashion reasons. Jeff has rocked his beard since 2002, only once making the grave mistake of shaving it.  We’re thankful he came back to his senses and is now rockin’ his beard in style.

Homeless or Hot?

Here’s a whole lotta beard to get your hump day off to a good start! Meet Jason. The look on his face is one of shock–he was in disbelief after moving here from Tucson to find that he couldn’t wear his tank top year round and that the sweat band was not considered a wardrobe staple. Jason told us that he grew this beauty, his “freedom beard”, once he got out of the army. He told us, “beards are natural, shaving is not. Some of history’s greatest men had this figured out, but for some reason they’re a rarity these days”. Word. His favorite part of his beard is that his circle of friends gets bigger each day– “having a beard and running into someone else with one…..you become friends instantly. You share a bond that the beardless will never know”. Jason admits to falling off the wagon early this year—“I had no intentions of shaving it off, ever, until one day some dude comes up to me on the bus and offers me soap and razors from his church. I had no idea what he was talking about until he said “it’s ok man, I used to be homeless too”. I went straight home and shaved it off.” That was one of the saddest stories we’d ever heard. Jason said he instantly regretted that decision and quickly removed all sharp objects from his house. Welcome back, our bearded friend.

Holy Joely

Joel Garland Bekken. Real name, real beard. Our endless reasearch has so far proved that you can find amazing beards in Denver pretty much anywhere. We found him at an art exhibit on Santa Fe. When he’s not appreciating fine photography, this man lives the life of a stereotypical beard–he lives up in the hills and works at Devil’s Thumb Ranch. He said he loves his beard because it keeps him warm during those cold winter nights and that it’s just “too un-manly not to have a beard”. We agree.

Tie-Dyed and Terrific

Allen Haumann from Boise, Idaho was one of our favorite characters of the entire competition. He started growing his beard, modeled here with curlers that were sure to show off his beard’s full beauty, because he and his friend Rebecca saw coverage of the international competition in Anchorage, Alaska a few years back, and she challenged him to grow a beard. Three years later, Allen did just that, and won the state competition in Idaho in August. “Shaving is evil” is his motto. We’re right on board with you there, Allen.

Seattle Strength

Nathan (left) and Feras (right) are two sassy strong men from Seattle who sported some seriously stellar beards. Nathan is a veteran of competition, this being is fourth overall and first nationals, and since he’s always had the gift of growing a beard naturally he sought out to capitalize on his talent. Feras, rockin’ that orange suit like nobody’s business, decided after college he needed to grow a beard because it was time to become a man. And we couldn’t love those glorious beards more, guys. Trust us.

Spiral Wonder

The genius behind this spectacular spiral-curled beard is none other than Paul Steinmiller from Colchester, Connecticut. This was Paul’s second time competing at nationals in the freestyle beard competition. He’s been growing his long facial locks for 28 years, though they’re normally tamed back into a braid for his work as a machinist; after all, it’d be a travesty for this amazing beard to get caught in any sort of equipment and be compromised! Paul and his delightful wife Debbie have known each other 17 years, and she’s never seen his chin, and never wants to. We don’t want to either, Debbie. We don’t want to, either.

Bird House

We ran into Joel while he was in deep bearded thought at
Denver’s natural beard retreat, Sancho’s Broken Arrow. This St. Louis born
bearded beauty told us his favorite part about his beard is that “the
birds can live there”. Sometimes it’s best not to ask too many
questions and just enjoy the bearded bliss.

Rocky Mountain Ryan

This boy scout knows a few things about survival; he never
sets out on his snowshoes without his trusty beard and an Irish
coffee. Ryan finds his beard to be his best accessory when out in the
wilderness- he can use it for kindling, it keeps him warm, and it also
intimidates wild animals. We’d want him on our camping trip.
