Beard as Religion

To continue in the spirit of our favorite month of the year--No Shave November--we bring to you today a redbearded wonder hailing from Jacksonville, Florida: Meet Matthew. We were fortunate enough to encounter Matthew and his amazing sweetheart Wendy and their daughter Dailyn at the Gentleman of the Road music tour in St. Augustine, Florida in September. Matthew has been growing his impressive beard since November 1st, 2012, and has no plans to stop: he explained to us, that, as he told his employer, that it's against his religion to shave, as his religion is man. We'll apply for membership in that church any day. Wendy told us she is quite fond of Matthew's bad-ass beard, though it does get tiring fending off the attention her man's mane garners. Matthew, who designs office interiors for a company in Jacksonville, told us his friends affectionately call him Mountain Man and we tend to agree; he'd fit right in with the bearded brotherhood in Denver! Like a woman with a pregnant belly, Matthew has to handle admirers who are a little too eager to caress his beard, but we sympathize with the adoring public: it's hard to resist such a work of art! Thanks Matthew, Wendy, and Dailyn, you made our day!

Matthew has been growing his impressive beard since November 1st, 2012, and has no plans to stop: he explained to us, that, as he told his employer, it’s against his religion to shave, as his religion is Man. We’ll happily apply for membership into The Church of the Beard any day. Wendy told us she is quite fond of Matthew’s bad-ass beard, though it does get tiring fending off the attention her man’s mane garners. Matthew, who designs office interiors for a company in Jacksonville, told us his friends affectionately call him Mountain Man and we tend to agree: He’d fit right in with the bearded brotherhood in Denver! Like a woman with a pregnant belly, Matthew has to handle aggressive admirers who are often a little too eager to caress his beard, but we sympathize with the adoring public; it’s hard to resist such a work of art! Thanks Matthew, Wendy, and Dailyn, you made our magical musical weekend a little sweeter!

Two Gingers

Occasionally, the ladies of Beards of Denver spread their wings and head out on a beard hunt in foreign lands. Back in September, adventures took the ladies of B of D to a far off land called St. Augustine, Florida, for the Gentleman of the Road tour, to see, Mumford & Sons, Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros, Justin Townes Earle, & many other fabulous musicians. With an event dubbed "Gentleman of the Road" you may not be surprised to read there were a plethora of bearded concert-goers, including Ross, pictured here with Stephanie, a dear friend of the Ladies of B of D. And since gingerbeards are particularly close to our hearts, we couldn't resist posting these two gingers together! Ross, who hails from the panhandle of Florida, has been growing his red-bearded mane for nearly a year. A Certified Public Account, for Warren Averett, he dedicated much of his Christmas break in 2012 to the beginnings of his beard, and we can't think of a better holiday gift to the world than more gingerbeards. Ross' lovely wife Anne wasn't a fan of his beard initially but now has fully gotten on board to support his beard. If they could drive six hours for a weekend of music, we have no doubt his dedication to his beard will last for several years into the future. Thanks Ross! We like Florida more now.

Occasionally, the ladies of Beards of Denver spread their wings and head out on a beard hunt in foreign lands. In September, adventures took the ladies of B of D away from our haven of landlocked mountain majesty to the ocean-enveloped locale dubbed St. Augustine, Florida to attend the Gentleman of the Road music tour and see Mumford & Sons, Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros, Justin Townes Earle, & many other fabulous musicians perform. With an event dubbed “Gentleman of the Road” you may not be surprised to learn there were a plethora of bearded concert-goers, including Ross, pictured here with Stephanie, a dear friend of the Ladies of B of D. Luckily for the universe, Ross’ place of employment welcomed his beard with open arms when he returned to work after the holiday season. Ross’ lovely wife Brianne wasn’t a fan of his beard initially but now has fully gotten on board to support his beard. If Ross and Anne could drive six hours for a weekend of music, we have no doubt Ross’ beard dedication will last for several years into the future. Thanks Ross! We like Florida more now.

True Yeard Achievement (From Afghanistan!)

Beards of Denver fans, we bring you today a Denver dude who has stayed true to the beard tradition even being literally thousands of miles away: meet Preston, who has been living in Afghanistan since January 2013. Preston contacted B of D from the base of the northern Afghanistan mountains (through the power of the mighty Facebook) and we are ever-so-glad he did. Preston is a true beard-liever, as even the summer heat of Afghanistan was no match for he and his beard; it stayed all summer, and he even proudly stated, “If I won't shave my beard for a girl, Afghanistan stands no chance.” Preston is a fairly recent Denver transplant, moving to the Five Points neighborhood of our wonderful city in November 2012, and if all goes as planned he will be back in town shortly after the new year. Preston relocated to Denver for many fantastic reasons, including the abundance of sunshine allowing for long motorcycle rides with his beard blowing in the wind, as well as the many options for skiing and riding: this beard does them both! Having formerly served in the Air Force for six years, Preston now flies UAS (Unmanned Aerial Systems) for a company and this allows him to live, and grow his beard, where he chooses. He can’t wait to come back home to Denver and enjoy the craft beer, mountain biking, camping, and of course, get many more compliments on that gorgeous beard. The photo featuring Preston’s and his beard documents his recent “YEARD” achievement: the first time he has ever let his beard grow a full year! We could not be prouder, and approve of that cigar of celebration. Take care Preston and can’t wait to admire that beard in person when you’re back in D-Town!

The Iced Beard

Oh boy, this was a fun one. Let’s go back and relive those Telluride times. B of D met Garrett on the way into the festival when we stopped into the refreshing Telluride Bottleworks for some much needed supplies. We found more than we expected: a fantastic beard and the chance to Ice it. A bond was formed and a new Telluride tradition was created. We Iced him every day….perhaps we just iced ourselves. We’ll never know. Garrett moved down to Telluride almost a year ago from Seattle. He’s been growing his current beard for just about a month (keep it up, buddy!) but has already found one of the amazing bearded perks—twirling the ‘ol mustache tips. Free time is solved! He said his mother is “okay with the beard, as long as I go somewhere in my life”. Garrett, my friend. The beard will take you where you need to go----onward and upward. He’s looking forward to another beautiful southern Colorado winter when he can pick the icicles out of his beard after skiing. Icicles? Iced? It was meant to be.

Tellu-ride the Gondola!

Until you’ve ridden the gondola with this beard, you haven’t lived. Meet Trevor! Hopefully we can help convince Trevor that his future move from Steamboat to Denver is a wise decision. (Do bearded men ever make wrong decisions? Didn’t think so.) Trevor, here’s just a small example of the bearded love you will soon be receiving on the regular. We support you. We support your patience and dedication to the bearded cause. Move where the beer flows like wine and the beards are celebrated with local pride! Trevor’s face hasn’t been naked for 8 months, when he sadly shaved for an unsuccessful job interview (hint: next time, keep the beard. It sends your future employer this message: “I can handle anything”). Trevor is a mapper, we weren’t surprised. Follow a bearded man into the forest, you will never be lost. His favorite part about his beard is that it has two vortexes. He warned us not to get too close because “you’ll fall in”. Don’t mind if we do, Trevor!

To Hell You Ride!

The B of D went on a spiritual journey last weekend and traveled to Telluride (aka beard mecca) for the 40th anniversary of the Telluride Bluegrass Festival. Oh boy, get ready for some fun festival beards! We kick off our T-town special with a return visit from one of B of D's favorite beards. Remember Coleman? Manly name, manly beard? We were lucky enough to bluegrass jam with Coleman and his bearded crew for much of the weekend. Coleman is known for having one of the best beards in Denver, having possibly the most fabulous sweetheart in Denver (she's a big supporter of the bearded cause) and he loves to protect the beautiful Rockies by occasionally putting out a wild fire or two. Thanks for saying ‘no’ to the razor, Coleman. No one works that bearded magic quite like you do!

Ha Ha Beard

We've got a special guest beard to make your Memorial Day weekend that much more memorable! Meet Anthony! Half of B of D was on the hunt in NYC this past week and happened upon this bearded gem at an underground comedy show. This beard will make your belly laugh and your ears ache for more of his sweet, sweet tunes. His current beard is only 6 months old. Favorite part? He doesn't like to shave. What?!?!? He treats his facial hair to a shampoo and conditioning treatment every day---you know what they say, a man with a well kept beard also knows how to treat a lady! When asked what mama thinks, he said "she thinks it looks fine" (and with the same amount of emotion that you'd imagined). Last time his face was naked was over 4 years ago, just for the hell of it. Check out his work at www.anthonykapfer.com You'll be glad you did! Hopefully we can convince Sir Anthony to take his show on the road and head to Denver!

Spring Training Baseball Beard

When the ladies of Beards of Denver headed down to Scottsdale, Arizona to catch some of the Colorado Rockies' spring training games, we were pleasantly surprised to also catch a great beard from (where else?) Denver! Meet Jeff, who we encountered at a Rockies vs. Brewers game on a sunny Sunday in Phoenix. Jeff's lovely wife Erica is a big fan of his beard; he usually shaves during baseball season, but with her encouraging he's likely to keep his beard all season long (it's sure to be the Rockies good luck charm, we're certain). Jeff and Erica live in HIghlands and will definitely be attending Opening Day this coming Friday. Jeff's favorite part of his beard is the beautiful girl it got him, and Erica says all her girlfriends admire Jeff's beard, too. Obviously, we like that those ladies share such good taste!

Lone Star ‘Stache

A few weeks ago, Beards of Denver ventured down to Dallas, Texas. When not searching for Willie Nelson and admitting that, yes, everything is bigger in Texas, we were fortunate enough to enjoy some whiskies while a country band played at Adair's Saloon in Dallas, and lucky enough to encounter our latest Guest 'Stache: Rhett. Rhett, who's had his 'stache in this amazing condition for the past three years or so is Fort Worth born and raised and now lived in Texas, but interestingly enough, had a Colorado connection of a friend's band touring in Denver the same weekend we met him; we thus loved he and his stellar 'stache even more. Rhett originally decided to grow out his 'stache to battle a buddy who was also growing out his beard, and he had--he said, regretabbly--recently trimmed up his 'stache. A hair stylist by trade, Rhett took extra pride in his 'stache, and we can see why!

Long Distance Denver

Nothing makes a B of D lady you feel more at home than meeting a great Denver beard out in southern CA! Meet Lance! We had the pleasure of chatting with Lance and his lovely lady, Lindsay, while nursing our sea level hangovers this weekend. Lance and his sweetheart recently moved to San Diego after spending 8 years in Denver. They may eventually be pulled back to the Rockies---especially if they need to support the opening of a local craft brewery (hint hint). Lance is a big fan of the beard comb. He shampoos, conditions and blow dries, but only on Fridays (weekend warrior!). This is one lucky dude, Lindsay fully supports his bearded efforts--she's never seen his chin naked and wants to keep it that way. Lance loves the Broncos and keeps it real while in Charger country. He proudly showed us a shirtless picture of himself with Peyton Manning. Seriously. It was awesome. Lance, hope you don't mind---you're going to be the first dual site beard and the first post on our brother site, beardsofsandiego.com!
