Here’s to the Happy Beards

There’s something to be said about going to Vine Street Pub in Denver in February (perhaps multiple times). It is Stout Month, after all, where nearly everyday a new Stout beer is unveiled to quench the thirst of Denverites who oh-so-love their beer. And, a well-known fact (which anyone who has gone to Vine Street even once can attest to) is that it is a mecca for encountering handsome bearded men.
Thus, we weren’t surprised–but were definitely delighted–to meet Andy and Mike (L-R) on Monday. These boys have known each other for several years, as they are both musicians, and a mutual affection for each other’s music lead to them playing in bands together in Denver.
Mike, who is originally from St. Louis but currently calls Littleton home, has a reason for donning a shorter beard these days; he’s currently undergoing chemotheraphy to treat Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, which he was diagnosed with only a few months ago. He told us earlier in the day he had cut off his long hair and donated it to Locks of Love, but his beard is holding on, despite the chemo (normally around the 18th chemo treatment most people lose their hair; Mike and his beard are at around 25 treatments now). Mike is very proud of his beard’s stamina, and rightfully so; he really, really wants his beard to keep on keepin’ on.
Andy, whose amazingly well-groomed beard was what first caught our eyes, has been in Denver, off and on, since 1995. In October 2012 he shaved his face clean to celebrate his divorce, and declared that his current off-the-charts beard is hence a completely happy version. You’ll find no sadness lingering here, people; Just a seriously kick-ass example of bearded bliss. Andy did note that the ladies LOVE his beard; about half the time women just come up and grab his beard rather than first ask permission. That’s some serious bold moves there, ladies.
Thanks for being such good sports and letting us crash your dinner guys! You are delightful.

Beardage a Trois

This post is looong overdue, sorry bearded foxes! Meet Ryan, Jack and Matt (L to R). We met these men while enjoying some delicious wine (Prisoner!) at Cru Wine Bar in Larimer Square. They are sure to make you laugh, cry, full and tipsy. Everything we look for in our bearded men!
Ryan is a Denver native. He loves the variety of colors his beard can provide and the minimal amount of maintenance. His poor mother hasn’t come around just yet and still isn’t a fan (give her time, Ryan).
Jack and his amazing beard obviously hail from a land that promotes large amounts of milk intake. Jack misses the warm lakes his home state of Michigan provides. He told us the last time he “took his beard down” was in September. He especially likes that his beard attracts women (duh). He gets it shaped every couple of weeks and is a fan of the occasional dab ‘o lotion to the beard face.
Then we get to Matt (Danger Mouse). This naughty beard from Delaware likes the way his beard tickles (of course you do). He loves the salt and pepper his beard displays. He takes it in once a month to have it shaped up. Last time he shaved it off was 5 years ago for a Magnum PI Halloween costume. Understood.
These beauties told us they are all (very surprisingly) single. You’re welcome, ladies!

Sideshow Trio

What better night than Valentine's day to meet a bearded triple-threat? Meet Tim, Clint, and Matt (L-R) who we happened upon at the Bonnie and the Beard show at the Hi-Dive on Thursday. Tim, rockin' the cowboy hat, had his amazing clay sculptures and art on display during the Carnival-themed pre-show party, and his buddies Clint and Matt were helping Tim lure in the customers (with their charm and awesome beards, of course). Tim, who is also a pedi-cab driver in Denver, doesn't rock his beard all year, but he assured us his wife loves it. Clint, who lives in Longmont and has been in Colorado since 1998, has had his beard about three months and though he doesn't sport it all year long, does sport it with style. And Matt, a drummer and marijuna grower who is originally from Detroit, has been in Denver three eyars and ALWAYS has his beard. Which we certainly appreciate.

Thanks for making Valentine’s day a little brighter for everyone, guys!

Beard Coached

The El Camino bar and restaurant in Highlands proved to be an EXTRA good choice on Sunday, because we also met Shad. Shad, a Denver native, has served up the thirsty masses of Denver as a bartender for the past few years, and more importantly has been growing his impressive beard since October. Shad was taken under the wing of one of the bearded gents who works at Fire on the Mountain up the street from El Camino, who gave Shad a pep talk on what products to use on his amazing beard and how to best care for it--we love these stories of beard brotherhood! Shad said he's been single for awhile (which we find very hard to believe) and so he decided to grow a beard since he had gotten flack about it from ladies in the past. Obviously, Shad's making some seriously great choices. Make sure to head into El Camino soon and tell Shad and his beard hello!

The Terminator

There are good choices in life, and bad choices. Some would say, going to a bar at 5 p.m. on a Sunday is a bad choice, but the ladies of Beards of Denver beg to differ, because if that was a bad choice, we would have never met Dave Yob. Dave is a bartender at El Camino bar and restaurant in Highlands, and he not only loves The Terminator, but is a major connoisseur of Monster Sports Drink. Dave has tailored this particular beard of his the past two years, and claims his mom is supportive of his beard; his dad is jealous (he can't grow one, a pity!); and his sweetheart is a big fan, "She'd probably leave me for another bearded man if I cut it off" Dave declared. She must be one wise woman! Born in Texas, Dave grew up in Fort Collins and has called Denver home the past 8 years. We encourage all of you to head over to El Camino soon and say hi to Dave, he and his beard are a delight!

Continental Deli Beards

It's pretty obvious that we ladies of Beads of Denver love a man with an amazing beard; we've laid the groundwork for that not-so-earth-shaking statement. But we also love a good bratwurst. Imagine our delight when we happened into Continental Deli in Cherry Creek on Saturday and not only sampled some amazing sausage, but met three handsome bearded gents working the counter! Meet Sam, Brace and Max (L-R). Sam, a Denver native, has had his beard about 5 months, and keeps it just in the winter months, where it serves him well while he's biking around Denver. Brace, also a Colorado native, has had this version of his beard about 9 months; he described his shaving habits as "lazy" thus leading to his facial prowess. Max keeps his heard all year long and before moving to Denver about four years ago he lived in Indiana. Max claimed no one was really a fan of his beard in Indiana but it's much more accepted in out here. We encourage everyone to stop into the deli and say hi to these great guys soon--and take advantage of the sample table! it was divine. Cheers guys!

Ultimate (frisbee) Beard

Who else could rock an awesome beard like this but someone who loves playing Ultimate Frisbee? Meet Brandon. Originally from the amazing and wonderful state of South Dakota, Brandon's been in Denver the past few years, but has called Colorado home since his CU Boulder days. Brandon, unfortunately, is one of our Beard Season Only beards; he's not as big of a fan of his beard himself, but the adoring public loves his beard so much he grows it out to please the masses each year. "I have the ability to grow a beard, so I need to exercise it" he told us, and we couldn't agree more. We're glad he aims to please! Thanks B-Rod!

Spike Ball Beard

It's not everyday you meet someone with an off-the-charts beard who also has a serious love of Spike Ball (if you haven't played, or heard of it, check it out! Hours of fun to be had). But then we met Nathan, who rocks the beard and harbors a deep love of Spike Ball. Nathan has had his beard off and on since college. He dated a woman in the past who told him he wasn't "Brad Pitt attractive" because he didn't have a chin; and so from that comment was born many years of carefully groomed beards! Nathan now is dating a wonderful woman, Catherine, for a few years ad she declared her love for his beard and had "no complaints". Smart woman!

Obviously, like the ladies of B of D, she knows a good thing when she sees it!

Poli Sci Beard

Beards of Denver fans, meet Brian from Boulder. We met Brian, and his lovely wife Kate, at a recent house party in Denver's South City Park neighborhood. Brian, who is a Political Science PhD candidate at CU Boulder, has had his amazing ginger beard about 8 years, the past 7 of them being in Colorado. When asked the most memorable comment anyone has made about his beard, a recent evaluation from a student came to mind: "Brian's beard brings benevolent warmth to the classroom that can't be put into words." We're pretty sure that student got an A+.

Cheeky Beard!

What a delight it was for B of D to stumble upon this beard while enjoying some delicious Belgium brews at Cheeky Monk on Colfax. Kyle moved to Denver 10 years ago from Illinois and he started growing this masterpiece on Halloween. Now, although it was refreshing to gain a different perspective on why the bearded man loves his beard, we may have blushed when given the reason. Mr. Kyle did compare the texture of his beard to “a lady’s under bits”. Yup. While he was explaining this, one of his adoring co-workers walked by and mumbled something about a “prison lady”? Whatever kind of love affair a man has with his beard is his business. He does like that the cougar ladies of the night tell him he’s the spitting image of Bradley Cooper with his beard. Work it, Kyle!
