Not Your Avs-erage Beard

As fans of Beards of Denver may not be surprised to learn, Red Rocks is one of the meccas of spotting epic beards. But when we saw Sean tailgating before the Avett Brothers show recently, we knew we'd spotted a bearded diamond in the rough. Sean, who lives in Colorado Springs and is a tattoo artist at Nostalgia Tattoo Co. there, not only can obviously grow an impressive beard, he has used his stunning handsomeness to his advantage, trying out to be a beard model in Bend, Oregon after he had heard about European Beard Models (that sounds like a trip we need to take!) Sean, who's a huge Colorado Avalanche fan, told us he and many others specifically will grow out their beards when the Stanley Cup starts, which seems like as good a reason as any for showing off that rad facial hair. When we asked Sean's lovely sweetheart Mandy if she was a fan of his beard, she noted she couldn't imagine him without it, since he's had it the entire three years of their courtship. She did say though that sometimes she grabs his beard at night instead of a blanket, which really seems like a better thing to nuzzle up in anyway! Also, apparently Sean and Mandy's cats aren't afraid to nuzzle right up in all that bearded-fierce-fantasticness, either! Obviously, they recognize. Thanks Sean! Keep up that great beard work.

We now know where we can get an awesome tatt AND gaze at an amazing beard.

Eat Your Veggies Beard

Sometimes when you go grocery shopping on Sunday afternoon you find a lot better things than bread and milk. We happened upon Phil and his awesome--and healthy--beard in the produce section of Sunflower Market in Highlands. Phil's been growing his beard the past 10 years, and he and five of his buddies recently had a competition to see who could grow the best, most badass beard, but Phil said he sadly lost because he had to trim his beard for a big meeting, as he works for an environmental non-profit. In Phil's words his beard was "way out of control." We're thinking we would have approved. Phil's wife loves his beard, and wants him to grow it even longer; she's obviously a very wise woman. We certainly hope Phil grants her request and grows his beard out to its full beard-potential!

Sometimes when you go grocery shopping on Sunday afternoon you find a lot better things than bread and milk. We happened upon Phil and his awesome–and healthy–beard in the produce section of Sunflower Market in Highlands. Phil’s been growing his beard the past 10 years, and he and five of his buddies–many of whom hang out or work at Fire on the Mountain in Highlands–recently had a competition to see who could grow the best, most badass beard, but Phil said he sadly lost because he had to trim his beard for a big meeting, as he works for an environmental non-profit. In Phil’s words his beard was “way out of control.” We’re thinking we would have approved. Phil’s wife Keenan loves his beard, and wants him to grow it even longer; she’s obviously a very wise woman. We certainly hope Phil grants her request and again grows his beard out to its full beard-potential!

Distinguished Gentelman

What’s there to say about this beard but WOW. Tyler Shannon from Seattle earned major props for his well-maintained verdi beard at the national competition, coming in second in a very competitive category. Apparently there’s a lot of time to keep a beard looking great while staying out of all that Seattle rain. One fan’s reaction to Tyler’s amazing beard sums it up perfectly: STELLAR, she said of his amazing man. Just STELLAR.

In the bearding together

Neil Moherman (left) from Ashland, Ohio and Bryan Fulk (right) from Los Angeles, California have been best friends far longer than they’ve been able to grow beards–their moms were girl scout troop leaders together in Ohio when they were kids. Neil, who entered the Full Beard, Natural competition, came out with top honors–earning the prestigious Gold Medal–and has been growing his long, blonde, beardlocks for five years. Both Neil and Bryan went to the World Championships in Anchorage, Alaska a few years ago, and got hooked on bearding. While Bryan competed in the Verdi Beard category in Anchorage, he was in Vegas solely for moral support this time around. All we know is that we’d hang out with this dashing bearded duo anytime they’re around.

Serious Sideburns

MJ Johnson from the Minneapolis Beard & Moustache Club does not mess around. Those sideburns were the most serious we had ever seen, and for his amazing efforts he was awarded third place in his category. Well earned, Mr. Johnson. Well earned.

Cooky Colorado

Don’t worry, Beards of Denver fans. We didn’t forget our Colorado love when we were in Vegas. Chris Olsen hails from outside of Boulder and was rockin’ this beard in the Sideburns Category at nationals. We loved his cooky Dr. Seuss-esque persona, and of course, his awesome beard. If you want to catch Chris and his sideburn beard out on the town, check out TIM the Band–which is Time in Motion music, a jazz fusion band. With a beard like that, they are sure not to disappoint. Check out the tunes here.

Tie-Dyed and Terrific

Allen Haumann from Boise, Idaho was one of our favorite characters of the entire competition. He started growing his beard, modeled here with curlers that were sure to show off his beard’s full beauty, because he and his friend Rebecca saw coverage of the international competition in Anchorage, Alaska a few years back, and she challenged him to grow a beard. Three years later, Allen did just that, and won the state competition in Idaho in August. “Shaving is evil” is his motto. We’re right on board with you there, Allen.

Seattle Strength

Nathan (left) and Feras (right) are two sassy strong men from Seattle who sported some seriously stellar beards. Nathan is a veteran of competition, this being is fourth overall and first nationals, and since he’s always had the gift of growing a beard naturally he sought out to capitalize on his talent. Feras, rockin’ that orange suit like nobody’s business, decided after college he needed to grow a beard because it was time to become a man. And we couldn’t love those glorious beards more, guys. Trust us.

Spiral Wonder

The genius behind this spectacular spiral-curled beard is none other than Paul Steinmiller from Colchester, Connecticut. This was Paul’s second time competing at nationals in the freestyle beard competition. He’s been growing his long facial locks for 28 years, though they’re normally tamed back into a braid for his work as a machinist; after all, it’d be a travesty for this amazing beard to get caught in any sort of equipment and be compromised! Paul and his delightful wife Debbie have known each other 17 years, and she’s never seen his chin, and never wants to. We don’t want to either, Debbie. We don’t want to, either.

Bearded Buds

Nick and Nolan are bearded buddies from Southern California who had a great showing at Nationals. Nick, holdings the Jamo on the left, spends his days molding young minds as a substitute teacher and Nolan keeps things working for the good of the people both on the railroad and as an electrician. They’ve been growing their beards for six months and one year, respectively. We can’t wait to see the progress that’s been made by next year!
