All Ears on This Beard

The ladies of Beards of Denver love catching live music in town, and recently when waiting to see the amazing band Pickwick play at the Bluebird theatre, we were lucky enough to meet Tim and admire his fantastic beard. Tim was not only at the show to enjoy the music, he was also covering it for the wonderful music website Listen Up Denver! TIm has been in Colorado 13 years, the past 10 in Denver, and he has also kept his beard the past 10 years (we, of course, think the correlation of beard growth and Denver residence is more than just a coincidence!) Tim's wife loves his beard, as does their seven week old daughter, Story. Already such good taste at such a young age! Tim and his beard also are contributing to building the local music scene in Denver; he helps organize the Soulfax Sessions at Park House, which are weekly free music nights on Thursdays at Park House. Be sure to check that out and say hi to Tim while you're at it!

Luck ‘O The Irish Beard

We've all heard of Luck of the Irish, but it was luck for the ladies of Beards of Denver to meet Mr. Al Trout on St. Patrick's Day at the Whiskey Bar in Denver. Al, who is originally from Kansas City but has lived in Denver about four and a half years, usually has some sort of facial hair going, and we were glad it was a beard when we met him! Recently, Al boasted a full-on handlebar mustache, and is attempting to grow it back since the New Year. Bad-ass beards run in Al's family, as his brother first encouraged him to grow a beard several years ago. Though we're sure Al spends lots of time contemplating his beard, he spends much more of it playing music; you can check out his Americana gems here. Thanks Al!

High Caliber Hi-Dive Beard

On a recent jaunt to the Hi-Dive, we were lucky enough to meet JJ. JJ, who is the head bartender at the Hi-Dive, hasn't been clean shaven in--get ready--12 years. He's grown his current impressive beard for about two and a half years, which started, much like some of our other amazing beards on Beards of Denver, as a battle with his buddies to see who could grow the most awesome one. When asked about care for his beard, JJ said he only started washing it about six months ago, but brushes it out everyday. Though he grew up in Kansas, JJ and his beard have called Denver home for the past nine years. He and his beard are celebrating their 30th year on June 21st with an art show at the Hi-Dive; seriously, his beard is a work of art on its own. Keep it growing, JJ!

Bearded Wine Wizard

On one recent weekday, late night excursion to Steubens, the ladies of Beards of Denver were lucky enough to late night dine with Bob and his fantastic beard. Bob not only can grow a stealth beard, he is also a wine connoisseur, as in, this bearded boy knows how to make the sauce! Because he's also extremely sharp, Bob's had his beard since he was 20 years old. Originally hailing from Southern Missouri, he's been in Denver for the past 10 years. A hustler at dominos, he also told us he excels at gold brickin', making hooch (as previously stated), and wrastlin'. Combine all that with his beard, he's really the total bearded package.

Amazing Bacon-Loving Beard

When you go to bacon and beer breakfast, you know you are in for a great time, guaranteed. It's a bonus then when you come across a great beard to go along with your bacon and beer. Met Casey, who was serving up tasty bacon from the Denver Bacon Company at the Denver Beer Company's beer and bacon breakfast on a recent gorgeous Saturday morning. Casey, who is the Chef De Cuisine at Masterpiece Delicatessen in Denver, has had this beard for teh past seven years. Casey's called Denver home the past nine years, and originally hails from the Cedar Rapids, Iowa area (thus the love of bacon is not surprising). We liked Casey even more when he told us he hasn't been clean shaven since he was 19 years old--start man. Casey's sweetheart loves his beard (wise woman) and his two brothers also have the ability to sport beards, but don't always keep them--mayabe they'll be more encouraged now!

Two Beards are Better than One

We've always been in love with Telluride. The skiing, bluegrass and blues means two things for the ladies of B of D: good times and great beards. We were in hog heaven last weekend while enjoying all of the magic that Telluride has to offer. These two beards were the cherries on top! Eryk and Jeff were so kind in letting their dinners be interrupted so we could snatch a shot of their glorious mugs. The meeting was kismet, they live in Denver! Eryk (left) is from the Chicago area originally but moved out west back in 1997 (when he was 12---which is strange because he told us his beard is 15 years old). Those Midwestern men! He likes everything about his beard, the sweetest part being how it feels against his hot man Jeff’s beard. Jeff moved out to Denver from Minnesota. He originally grew the beard as a protective layer during the harsh Minnesota winters. He loves that birds can live in his beard, if he lets it grow long enough. *Interesting fact, this was not the first time we’ve gotten that comment… He also is a big fan of the beard on beard action, it’s probably because they’re both Dove soap users. Those commercials don’t lie! Nice meeting you fine men!

Here’s to the Happy Beards

There’s something to be said about going to Vine Street Pub in Denver in February (perhaps multiple times). It is Stout Month, after all, where nearly everyday a new Stout beer is unveiled to quench the thirst of Denverites who oh-so-love their beer. And, a well-known fact (which anyone who has gone to Vine Street even once can attest to) is that it is a mecca for encountering handsome bearded men.
Thus, we weren’t surprised–but were definitely delighted–to meet Andy and Mike (L-R) on Monday. These boys have known each other for several years, as they are both musicians, and a mutual affection for each other’s music lead to them playing in bands together in Denver.
Mike, who is originally from St. Louis but currently calls Littleton home, has a reason for donning a shorter beard these days; he’s currently undergoing chemotheraphy to treat Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, which he was diagnosed with only a few months ago. He told us earlier in the day he had cut off his long hair and donated it to Locks of Love, but his beard is holding on, despite the chemo (normally around the 18th chemo treatment most people lose their hair; Mike and his beard are at around 25 treatments now). Mike is very proud of his beard’s stamina, and rightfully so; he really, really wants his beard to keep on keepin’ on.
Andy, whose amazingly well-groomed beard was what first caught our eyes, has been in Denver, off and on, since 1995. In October 2012 he shaved his face clean to celebrate his divorce, and declared that his current off-the-charts beard is hence a completely happy version. You’ll find no sadness lingering here, people; Just a seriously kick-ass example of bearded bliss. Andy did note that the ladies LOVE his beard; about half the time women just come up and grab his beard rather than first ask permission. That’s some serious bold moves there, ladies.
Thanks for being such good sports and letting us crash your dinner guys! You are delightful.

Beard Coached

The El Camino bar and restaurant in Highlands proved to be an EXTRA good choice on Sunday, because we also met Shad. Shad, a Denver native, has served up the thirsty masses of Denver as a bartender for the past few years, and more importantly has been growing his impressive beard since October. Shad was taken under the wing of one of the bearded gents who works at Fire on the Mountain up the street from El Camino, who gave Shad a pep talk on what products to use on his amazing beard and how to best care for it--we love these stories of beard brotherhood! Shad said he's been single for awhile (which we find very hard to believe) and so he decided to grow a beard since he had gotten flack about it from ladies in the past. Obviously, Shad's making some seriously great choices. Make sure to head into El Camino soon and tell Shad and his beard hello!

Continental Deli Beards

It's pretty obvious that we ladies of Beads of Denver love a man with an amazing beard; we've laid the groundwork for that not-so-earth-shaking statement. But we also love a good bratwurst. Imagine our delight when we happened into Continental Deli in Cherry Creek on Saturday and not only sampled some amazing sausage, but met three handsome bearded gents working the counter! Meet Sam, Brace and Max (L-R). Sam, a Denver native, has had his beard about 5 months, and keeps it just in the winter months, where it serves him well while he's biking around Denver. Brace, also a Colorado native, has had this version of his beard about 9 months; he described his shaving habits as "lazy" thus leading to his facial prowess. Max keeps his heard all year long and before moving to Denver about four years ago he lived in Indiana. Max claimed no one was really a fan of his beard in Indiana but it's much more accepted in out here. We encourage everyone to stop into the deli and say hi to these great guys soon--and take advantage of the sample table! it was divine. Cheers guys!

Ultimate (frisbee) Beard

Who else could rock an awesome beard like this but someone who loves playing Ultimate Frisbee? Meet Brandon. Originally from the amazing and wonderful state of South Dakota, Brandon's been in Denver the past few years, but has called Colorado home since his CU Boulder days. Brandon, unfortunately, is one of our Beard Season Only beards; he's not as big of a fan of his beard himself, but the adoring public loves his beard so much he grows it out to please the masses each year. "I have the ability to grow a beard, so I need to exercise it" he told us, and we couldn't agree more. We're glad he aims to please! Thanks B-Rod!
