Bearded Road Warrior

On a recent week day night, at the Hi-Dive in Denver (little known fact, that was where Beards of Denver was born!) we were lucky enough to strike up a conversation with Ruston Kelly, one of the musicians performing that night. From Nashville, Ruston was on tour with Marcus Foster and was kind enough to chat with us about his beard. Normally, he says he has it much longer (you can check out his website for longer beard photos, and for his music) but he says he has to change it up. Something to spice up those long stretches on the road between gigs, we imagine! We look forward to catching his show next time he's in town--and updating you all on the state of his beard!

Not only can he grow a mean beard, he’s an amazing musician and perhaps a personal favorite of the ladies of Beards of Denver for covering “Come Pick Me Up” by Ryan Adams. We look forward to catching his show next time he’s in town–and, naturally, updating you all on the state of his beard!

Here’s to the Happy Beards

There’s something to be said about going to Vine Street Pub in Denver in February (perhaps multiple times). It is Stout Month, after all, where nearly everyday a new Stout beer is unveiled to quench the thirst of Denverites who oh-so-love their beer. And, a well-known fact (which anyone who has gone to Vine Street even once can attest to) is that it is a mecca for encountering handsome bearded men.
Thus, we weren’t surprised–but were definitely delighted–to meet Andy and Mike (L-R) on Monday. These boys have known each other for several years, as they are both musicians, and a mutual affection for each other’s music lead to them playing in bands together in Denver.
Mike, who is originally from St. Louis but currently calls Littleton home, has a reason for donning a shorter beard these days; he’s currently undergoing chemotheraphy to treat Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, which he was diagnosed with only a few months ago. He told us earlier in the day he had cut off his long hair and donated it to Locks of Love, but his beard is holding on, despite the chemo (normally around the 18th chemo treatment most people lose their hair; Mike and his beard are at around 25 treatments now). Mike is very proud of his beard’s stamina, and rightfully so; he really, really wants his beard to keep on keepin’ on.
Andy, whose amazingly well-groomed beard was what first caught our eyes, has been in Denver, off and on, since 1995. In October 2012 he shaved his face clean to celebrate his divorce, and declared that his current off-the-charts beard is hence a completely happy version. You’ll find no sadness lingering here, people; Just a seriously kick-ass example of bearded bliss. Andy did note that the ladies LOVE his beard; about half the time women just come up and grab his beard rather than first ask permission. That’s some serious bold moves there, ladies.
Thanks for being such good sports and letting us crash your dinner guys! You are delightful.

Aloha Beard

Maybe some would argue that not ALL good things pass through the Bluebird Theater in Denver, but over the years a whole lot of fabulous bands--and fabulous beards--sure have. Meet Brian and his bodacious beard. Brian and his lovely girlfriend Caley recently moved from Hawaii to Boulder and we met them before the Rob Drabkin concert at the Bluebird last Friday. Originally from Texas, Brian hasn't shaved his beard in the past seven years, and shows true dedication by working on his beard 24/7 (we probably don't need to mention that men with beards are especially witty). He's always doing something interesting with his beard, and in his other spare time he's an LSAT teacher, a massage therapist, and dabbles in music himself; an example of a true multi-talented bearded dude. Caley, who works as a doula, of course loves and supports Brian's awesome beard. We wouldn't expect anything less from a bearded man's main lady. Great to meet you and have you and your beard in Colorado!

L.A.M.A. Live Beards

It was our pleasant surprise to encounter three members of Denver's up-and-coming hip-hop band L.A.M.A. Live at the Whiskey Bar last week before their band practice. Ha Boogie (left), Nam (center), and Matt (right) have been playing music together the past two years and counting, and rocking those beards together as well. Ha Boogie hails from Queens, Nam from Brooklyn, and our boy Matt is a Colorado native, but they all three call Denver home now, and they wouldn't change that for the world, because, in their words "The most beautiful women in the world live in Denver." Keep talking like that boys, and sporting those beards, and the ladies will certainly come a calling. Speaking of beautiful women, when asked what their mothers thought of their beards, Ha Boogie said his mom loves it because it makes him look more like his father, Nam's beard is still in its infancy so his mom hasn't weighed in yet, and Matt's mom doesn't like his beard (we, of course, respectively disagree). You can catch L.A.M.A. Live TOMORROW when they open for Vanilla Ice in Lakewood at the Grizzly Rock! Be there.

PBR Proud Beards

We met Alex Townsend and Matt Kiernan at the Ogden Theater on Thursday while they were buying PBR tallboys and preparing to enjoy the Trampled by Turtles show. Matt (right) is a snowboarder who keeps his beard only during Beard Season to keep his face warm. Alex (left) finished his stint in the Air Force in Summer 2009 and has enjoyed the freedom to grow his beard as full and long as he'd like since then. We just missed seeing it even burlier, as he had to trim back his awesome beard for his sister's wedding recently. Both Matt and Alex attest to the fact their mothers are not fans of their beards but we respectfully disagree--all that handsomeness is even better with beards! Matt and Alex work together at Trulia real estate in advertising, and we're sure they don't have any trouble selling property with the help of their amazing beards. Thanks guys!

Beards of Banjos and Brews

Of course we weren’t done with the Trampled beards!
It was a pleasure meeting “Woody” (left) and “D” (right) last week at the show.
We know (perhaps from research) that you can find Woody and his beard slinging brew at the one and only Denver Beer Co. He told us his favorite part about having a beard is the lack of attention it needs and the amount of attention it gets. He must have good taste in women because his girlfriend loves his facial fur. Believe it or not, more milk than beer ends up getting caught in his beard.
D’s from Duluth, MN and is a bluegrass man through and through. We quickly learned that “D” is a man of few words. When asked about what he’d like to say for his beard he told us, “pretty sure the beard speaks for itself”. Sure does, my friend.

Metal Brewery Beard, It’s TRVE

We had the pleasure to meet Nick at the Denver Beer Festivus sponsored by Imbibe.com on Saturday in Denver. Nick is the proprietor at TRVE Brewing Company located at Second and Broadway, which specializes in making great brews AND playing metal music. Nick, originally from the east coast, started growing his beard around 2006, and has had his current beard about six months. His favorite thing about his beard is the attention it gets him, and deservedly so! TRVE Brewing Company is currently open Wednesday through Saturday, but in January you can enjoy a brew there on Sundays, too. We encourage you to drop by sooner than later—it’s not everywhere you can enjoy a great beer, metal music, and admire an awesome beard.

Other Worldly Beard

Ryan was another beardie we were lucky enough to meet at the Of Monsters and Men show in Boulder last week. Ryan’s had his beard for about four years, and again, laziness in reference to shaving is the main contributor to his handsome beard. Ryan is another wonderful Colorado native beard: he now lives in Boulder, but grew up in the Littleton area. While growing out that amazing facial mane, he works as a mechanical engineer for the University of Colorado in satellite and space weather research. We’d certainly vouch that his beard is out of this world!

Monstrous yet Manly

We met Brad in Boulder at the Of Monsters and Men show last week. His main reason for growing his beard is, like so many men we encounter, is laziness (in regards to shaving). Brad usually keeps his beard for a month or two before shaving it and starting over. He spent some time in Alaska in recent years, where his beard was really able to grow out to its full glory. We can only imagine how magnificent it was!. Brad and his beard are Colorado natives and we sure hope he decides to extend his beard’s lifetime, at least throughout the current Beard Season!

Stick ‘Em Up

We met John, a local Denver musician, along with his lovely wife Becca at the Candlelight Tavern Saturday night. John, who plays guitar and bass, first grew his beard when he and Becca met (she made him do it; she's a good woman). He was both excited to be approached by Beards of Denver and bummed that he just had trimmed his awesome beard. John's favorite feature of his beard is the amazing white streak on the right side of it. John all we know is we love it all!
