The Handlebeard

Beards of Denver fans, Meet Dan and his sweetheart Christy, and feat your eyes on Dan’s fantastic, artistic ‘stache! Christy created this ‘stache masterpiece from Dan’s formerly full beard; apparently, Dan felt he needed a fun change and Christy was able to play Picasso—and—viola!—the masterpiece emerged! The Handlebeard was a smash hit at Dan’s work Christmas party with his co-workers AND his boss, but proved a bit high maintenance. After about a week of gaining adoration from strangers (in restaurants and public transit) and family alike, Dan, a Missouri native, who has been in Denver about seven years, decided to shave it off and bring the full beard back to its glory. Christy, originally from Illinois, has called Denver home for just over two years. She said she had never known too many guys with beards until landing in the Mile High City. Her favorite part is the fuzziness—the middle-to-end stage when the beard softens up, and she thinks most women would agree with her on that (I know we do!) One thing Christy does caution about is the “stubble burn” that bearded men might leave on their significant others’ cheeks when they start to grow their beards back out; early on, the glorious beard may feel like sandpaper, and when kissing their sweetheart and then rubbing their cheek, the beard, in its infancy, can leave a mark. We say it’s all worth it though for such handsome specimen! Thanks guys—we can’t wait to see what creation is next!

4 Beardeteers

Meet Dave and Cush! These two are friends of the already famous beards on the right, Phil and Jeter. Dave's from NY and has been a Colorado mountain man for the past 15 years. He typically always has a beard but recently shaved it---we won't hold it against him. This kayaker is only clean shaven for the season and once it’s over he quickly grows it back to stop the feeling of being consistently naked in public. He is an all natural type of man, has never once let a comb touch his locks. To his left is Mr. Cush from Hotlanta! He’s been living in Denver for the past two years. Upon arrival to the Mile High City, Dave let the beard do as it pleased. He finally escaped the clutches of corporate America and was free to live as the universe intended; with beard. He thanks the beard every day on the slopes for his free ski mask. Nice meeting these ‘Fire on the Mountain’ Beards!

Genius Johnny

Where else might you encounter a genius than the Apple Store in Cherry Creek? That's where we met Johnny and his impressive beard this week. Johnny, who participated in Movember said he often has a beard and plans to keep it at least until the Spring Equinox. Originally from Lakeland, Florida he's lived in Denver the past three and a half years. He says everyone loves his beard--except his sweetheart--who gives it the thumbs down and wants it gone; we think she'll come around to his beard's awesomeness though. I mean, if almost everyone loves it AND it keeps his face warm, it's so multi-functional. We think that, in itself, is genius.

So Happy to Be Bearded

We were lucky enough to run into Ryan at the Irish Rover a few weeks ago, and Ryan is quite possibly the happiest beard we have met to date! Ryan has had his fantastic beard since Mid-October and credits its fantastic growth to multiple factors: laziness, never straight razor shaving, participating in No Shave November, winter warmth, and growing it out to support his two favorite football teams--the Packers and Broncos--in their playoff pursuits (sadly, no dice for either team this year, but that is certainly no fault of Ryan's kick-ass beard). Ryan has lived in Idaho Springs for just over a year, but used to live in Denver, and before that spent 24 years in Flagstaff, AZ. We're certainly glad he's come to call Colorado home! Ryan, who's single, said most of the ladies like the beard, and with this high of quality he likely won't be on the market for long!

Secret Agent Beard

No matter what part of town we're in, we seem to be lucky enough to encounter some amazing bearded men, and last Saturday on South Broadway was no exception to that rule. Zach is a Colorado native we met while he was ordering a pint at the Irish Rover. Zach keeps his beard most of the year and claims it holds lots of secrets--we can only imagine. Zach and his beard live in Capitol Hill and when not out in SoBo he can be found helping people out with their insurance claims at the DMV when they jack up their cars; a noble trade indeed. Zach assured us his lady friend loves his beard--or else she's a talented liar--and that his dad is jealous of his beard skills; he hopes to grow his own beard out once he retires. We're glad Zach's father has his eyes on the prize. And did we mention that cardigan? Yeah, probably didn't have to, but it sure adds to the whole lot of awesome here. Thanks Zach!

Aloha Beard

Maybe some would argue that not ALL good things pass through the Bluebird Theater in Denver, but over the years a whole lot of fabulous bands--and fabulous beards--sure have. Meet Brian and his bodacious beard. Brian and his lovely girlfriend Caley recently moved from Hawaii to Boulder and we met them before the Rob Drabkin concert at the Bluebird last Friday. Originally from Texas, Brian hasn't shaved his beard in the past seven years, and shows true dedication by working on his beard 24/7 (we probably don't need to mention that men with beards are especially witty). He's always doing something interesting with his beard, and in his other spare time he's an LSAT teacher, a massage therapist, and dabbles in music himself; an example of a true multi-talented bearded dude. Caley, who works as a doula, of course loves and supports Brian's awesome beard. We wouldn't expect anything less from a bearded man's main lady. Great to meet you and have you and your beard in Colorado!

Southern Gentleman

Who says chivalry is dead? We met Seth Williams, a true southern gentleman originally from Tennessee, working the door at Goosetown Tavern (one of B of D's fave haunts) last week. Seth and his impressive beard have lived in City Park in Denver the past three years, and he proudly declared that he "ALWAYS has a beard." Seth and his beard love Colorado and when he's not carding thirsty patrons at the Goose he can be found hiking 14ers with his dog, Mary, attending Widespread Panic shows--over 100 to date--or at the Ecotech Institute, where he's a full-time electrical engineering student. Seth's one busy gent, as he also works at Home Depot where his colleagues refer to him as "The Bearded Wonder" (we're not surprised). He also noted that he's considered having a shirt made that read, "I had a beard before it was cool." Of course, we at Beards of Denver never knew when beards weren't cool. Make sure to say hi to Seth next time you're at the Goose!

One Red Hot Beard

We met Jeter and his fantastic beard based on a hot tip from one of our other local bearded gems that we must check out the bearded gents at Fire on the Mountain restaurant in Highlands, and boy were we glad that we did. Jeter hails from Mississippi, but has called Colorado home for the past two years and landed in Denver in September 2012. He and his sweetheart Jessica had been visiting friends in Vail and Avon for years and finally decided to make the wise choice and move to Colorado . When we encountered Jeter last week, Jessica had just trimmed his beard because it literally was becoming a fire hazard; he had burned it the day before! Jessica noted she loves Jeter's beard, despite the fact he often gets beer in it and that she occasionally finds that he's left her comb in the shower because he's been grooming his glorious beard with it. She doesn't mind though; that's what we call true beard love!

L.A.M.A. Live Beards

It was our pleasant surprise to encounter three members of Denver's up-and-coming hip-hop band L.A.M.A. Live at the Whiskey Bar last week before their band practice. Ha Boogie (left), Nam (center), and Matt (right) have been playing music together the past two years and counting, and rocking those beards together as well. Ha Boogie hails from Queens, Nam from Brooklyn, and our boy Matt is a Colorado native, but they all three call Denver home now, and they wouldn't change that for the world, because, in their words "The most beautiful women in the world live in Denver." Keep talking like that boys, and sporting those beards, and the ladies will certainly come a calling. Speaking of beautiful women, when asked what their mothers thought of their beards, Ha Boogie said his mom loves it because it makes him look more like his father, Nam's beard is still in its infancy so his mom hasn't weighed in yet, and Matt's mom doesn't like his beard (we, of course, respectively disagree). You can catch L.A.M.A. Live TOMORROW when they open for Vanilla Ice in Lakewood at the Grizzly Rock! Be there.

Eat Your Veggies Beard

Sometimes when you go grocery shopping on Sunday afternoon you find a lot better things than bread and milk. We happened upon Phil and his awesome--and healthy--beard in the produce section of Sunflower Market in Highlands. Phil's been growing his beard the past 10 years, and he and five of his buddies recently had a competition to see who could grow the best, most badass beard, but Phil said he sadly lost because he had to trim his beard for a big meeting, as he works for an environmental non-profit. In Phil's words his beard was "way out of control." We're thinking we would have approved. Phil's wife loves his beard, and wants him to grow it even longer; she's obviously a very wise woman. We certainly hope Phil grants her request and grows his beard out to its full beard-potential!

We certainly hope Phil grants her request and again grows his beard out to its full beard-potential!
